CAS 2021 Action Theme – Accelerating African Adaptation
Accelerating African Adaptation is one of the Action Themes at the Climate Adaptation Summit (CAS) 2021.
Why is Accelerating African Adaptation an Action Theme at CAS 2021?
Climate change affects us all, but hits some harder than others. The African continent is on the frontline of climate change, with impacts already being felt. At the same time, Africa has inherent strengths, vast adaptive capacity and offers significant opportunities for climate-resilient economic development.
Therefore, the importance of Africa is reflected throughout CAS 2021. It is an Action Theme by itself as well as part of all other Action Themes.
How is CAS 2021 going to make a difference for Africa?
During CAS 2021, the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of the Netherlands, Sigrid Kaag, will chair a special Anchoring Event to galvanise solutions to significantly scale up adaptation efforts on the African continent.
For all its challenges, Africa has lots of innovative and creative solutions available. However, more urgency, innovation, and scale are needed. Together, across borders and sectors, we can overcome climate adaptation barriers and unlock the enormous creativity of people, businesses, and communities to develop adaptation solutions.
This action-oriented event brings together African policymakers, the private sector, civil society, and youth to share their visions on how to accelerate action, to showcase inspiring initiatives CAS participants can adopt and scale up, and to discuss adaptation challenges and opportunities in a panel discussion moderated by Wanjira Mathai (WRI Africa).
To help frame the discussions during this event, the Climate Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) launched a working paper, laying out an agenda for unlocking effective, accelerated adaptation at scale in Africa based on investing in climate-resilient people, economies and in nature.
